OSF HealthCare has been recognized with the 2025 Green Horizons Sustainability Award – Silver Level from Medtronic for our commitment to environmental stewardship through the Nellcor pulse oximeter reprocessing program.

This achievement reflects the dedication of Mission Partners across the Ministry who help collect single-use pulse oximeters for reprocessing rather than disposal. Through this effort, devices that would otherwise end up in landfills are safely cleaned, sterilized, tested and returned for reuse by the health care system.

In 2024, OSF collected more than 169,000 pulse oximeters, representing 32% of all pulse oximeters collected across participating organizations. This outstanding collection rate earned OSF Silver-level recognition for notable improvement and a strong commitment to sustainability.

The award highlights the impact of thousands of daily actions taken by clinical teams, Environmental Services, Supply Chain and other Mission Partners who support proper collection and disposal practices.

"Our sustainability successes are only possible because of the commitment of Mission Partners throughout the Ministry," said Michael Keefe, Energy & Sustainability Manager. "This recognition demonstrates how small actions can make a significant difference in reducing waste and supporting a healthier future."

Medical device reprocessing is an important part of the sustainability strategy for OSF. In 2025, OSF collected more than 207,000 single-use medical devices for reprocessing, diverting nearly 45,000 pounds of medical waste from landfills while helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

This recognition is a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation across OSF. By embracing sustainable practices, Mission Partners are helping reduce waste, conserve resources and support a more circular approach to health care without compromising the exceptional care we provide to our patients.

As we continue our sustainability journey, every collected device makes a difference. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to responsible resource stewardship and for helping OSF create a healthier future for our patients, communities and the environment. Together, we can continue to expand our impact, one device, one department and one Mission Partner at a time.

Congratulations and thank you to all Mission Partners who made this achievement possible!
